What are the different designations of leather TRUE uses?

Our product development team always strives to utilize the most premium and appropriate materials for any TRUE footwear design. They are constantly educating themselves on sustainable and eco friendly options, such as the Eco Recycled leather used on the core FS-01 model but sometimes a premium full-grain or top-grain leather is the best option given its potential longevity with good care as well as its instant comfort out of the box.

Here is a basic outline of our Leather material types:

Full-grain leather

Full-grain leather simply means that the hair is removed and the hide goes immediately into the tanning process. It is thicker, stronger and more durable but will have a bit more bulk to it. As it is less processed, this leather will show more characteristics of the hide but given how its tanned, will have most longevity if cared for properly with cleaning and conditioning. It also has the potential to show patina over time. Many of our full-grain leather models are cosmetically finished, so scuffs and scrapes can show, but with cleaning and conditioning, most leather can be reconditioned to an even luster. Our New FS-01 in Vintage White and White/Grey feature full-grain leather.

Top-grain leather

When a pristine look is desired, top grain leather is the best option. The leather is named top grain because the very top layer is sanded, buffed or shaved off. Shaving off the top layer may also be referred to as splitting leather. Splitting the leather can remove surface imperfections and start with a fresh top surface for a variety of finishes to be applied. The result is a nicer looking, softer and thinner leather which is ideal for certain premium models, minimizing bulk but still providing all the benefits of a premium leather. You can find premiums Napa Top-grain leather being utilized on certain Tour models like core versions of Lux Tour, OG Tour and FS Tour.

Eco Recycled leather

Full-grain and top-grain leather scraps are recycled and processed with a small amount of bonding material to produce a new and almost fully leather material. This Eco leather features most benefits of a full-grain leather though as it is not sourced from a single hide, it will not be quite as soft as full-grain leather. It is very durable and makes sustainable use out of otherwise wasted premium materials, so its a great option for eco-focused products like our FS-01.
